Homework Helper

Help the Homework Assistant to encourage and support children in developing information handling and learning skills in order to raise educational attainment and create positive attitudes to lifelong learning.

What's involved?

What Will I Be Doing?

Homework Helpers support the Homework Assistant in the following:

  1. Provide a welcoming and supportive environment for children to do their homework.
  2. Work with children to develop information handling and learning skills using text and electronic sources.
  3. Encourage a good working atmosphere with reasonable noise levels.

A volunteer may be involved in one or more activities as agreed with the Homework Assistant. 

When Will I Be Volunteering?

Regularly, on a long term placement. Rota to be discussed upon application.

At anyone of the following branches:

  • Luton Central Library
  • Leagrave Library
  • Marsh Farm
  • Lewsey
  • Stopsley

Will There Be Any Training?

Yes, you will have an induction. You will also be briefed and trained on the role during the first few sessions you volunteer.

  • are reasonably confident in themselves

  • like helping and encouraging people
  • are interested in education and community work
  • are good listeners
  • good communicators - good written and spoken English essential
  • are multi-lingual (not essential)

Please Note:

  • You must be aged 16 years or older.
  • We will ask you to complete a volunteer application form.
  • If you are aged 18 years or older you will need to be able to provide references.
  • If you are aged 16 - 17 years you will need your parent/guardian written consent to volunteer.
